Number one

Safety

A place to be fully known

What it is: A place where they can be fully known and fully loved.

Do this: The next time your child comes to you with something hard, resist the urge to fix it. Ask one question. Listen a little longer.

Number two

Identity

To know who they really are

What it is: Knowing who they are so the world doesn't get to decide for them.

Do this: Tell your child one thing you admire about who they are. Be specific. Let them hear it more than once.

Number three

Gratitude

To see what's already good

What it is: The ability to notice what's already good, even when things are hard.

Do this: At dinner tonight, ask everyone, "What was one good thing about today?" Be sure to answer the question yourself.

Number four

Resilience

To know they can do hard things

What it is: Knowing they can face hard things

Do this: Find one place where your child is feeling stuck. Instead of solving it for them, ask what support would help them take the next step.

Number five

Purpose

A life bigger than just them

What it is: Knowing they were created for something bigger than themselves.

Do this: Tell your child about one way they've already made a difference. It could be to you, a friend, a sibling, or someone at school. Be specific.
